Bluesky vs Mastodon vs Threads: which should you post to?
Three short-form networks with very different cultures. How to choose, or run all three without extra work.
By the Sosial team
The three alternatives to X are not interchangeable. They have different lengths, different norms and different reasons people are there.
Bluesky
300 characters, custom feeds, a technical and creative audience. Alt text on images is expected. Good for short takes and linking to longer work.
Mastodon
500 characters on most servers, federated, community-minded. Hashtags genuinely help discovery here. Content warnings and alt text are social norms, not optional extras.
Threads
500 characters, conversational, replies regularly out-reach originals. Hashtags do almost nothing. Write like you are texting, not broadcasting.
Which one
If your audience is technical, Mastodon and Bluesky. If it is consumer-facing, Threads. If you cannot choose, the answer is usually "all three with an adapted caption" — the same core post, adjusted for each network's length and tone.
