How to write and schedule an X thread that holds attention
Thread-writing rules that survive the 280-character limit, and where to place the links.
By the Sosial team
A thread is not a blog post cut into pieces. It is an argument delivered one step at a time, where each step has to be worth reading on its own.
Rules for the thread
- One idea per post. If a post needs the next one to make sense, it is too long.
- No throat-clearing. Delete "a thread", "let me explain" and every warm-up sentence.
- Keep each post under 280 characters with room for the point to land.
- The final post resolves the thread. Do not trail off.
Where links go
X no longer counts a link's card against the character limit, but a post that exists only to carry a link rarely performs. If the link is the point, make the surrounding posts valuable anyway.
Scheduling a thread
Write the thread as separate numbered posts in the composer, then schedule the whole chain. Sosial publishes them in order. If a post exceeds 280 characters, the counter warns you before you schedule rather than letting an automatic split land somewhere ugly.
Reuse the thread
The same thread structure works on Threads, Bluesky and Mastodon. Adjust the tone and the length, then schedule all four from one session.
