A hashtag strategy that still works in 2026
Hashtags are not dead, but they are not a growth lever either. Here is what they are actually for now.
By the Sosial team
Hashtags once felt like a cheat code. Today they are closer to a labelling system: useful for categorising and for a small amount of discovery, not a way to manufacture reach.
What changed
- Recommendation feeds now weigh watch time and saves far above tags.
- Generic tags are saturated beyond usefulness — #marketing is millions of posts deep.
- Platform cultures diverged: Instagram tolerates a handful, Threads ignores them, Mastodon rewards them.
What to do instead
Use three to five specific tags that describe the content precisely — think #smallbusinessbookkeeping, not #business. Add one community tag if you have one. Then stop, and spend the effort on the first line of the caption instead.
Per channel
- Instagram: 3–8 specific tags. Thirty generic ones read as spam.
- X: 0–2. They mostly add noise.
- LinkedIn: up to 3.
- Mastodon: 2–3 well-chosen tags genuinely help discovery.
- Threads and Bluesky: skip them.
